ICM-20789 enables Prosumer level flight control stability for Toy and Smart drones
SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 4, 2017– InvenSense, Inc. (NYSE:INVN), a leading provider of MEMS sensors platform solutions, has entered mass production with the world’s only 7-axis motion sensor. The ICM-20789 integrates InvenSense’s leading 6-axis (3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope) MEMS motion sensor with InvenSense’s world class pressure sensor, providing a solution with performance on par with best in class discrete parts. InvenSense six-axis motion sensors have long enabled the drone market, including toy and commercial segments, owing to their reliable core performance, and immunity to the wide range of harsh stimulus that a drone experiences in its various stages of flight. The ICM-20789 provides an easy upgrade path for our customers to build on the time-tested performance of InvenSense 6-axis sensors, by adding a relative pressure sensor based on capacitive technology with class leading performance and exceptional temperature stability. The combined performance in these two key areas are a must-have in toy drones, where a majority of consumers have limited flight control expertise, or smart drones that need to maintain autonomous flight stability, for example, in order to follow a user while capturing video.
The prosumer drone market has long been taking advantage of pressure sensors to ease flight take-off and landing, as well as provide stable hover mode using discrete six-axis and pressure sensors. The ICM-20789, complemented with InvenSense’ drone fusion software, specifically developed for this market, brings prosumer drone level stability to toy and smart drone markets. With accurate elevation control, a toy drone no longer need crash into ceilings indoors, end up on the roof, or trees outdoors as it will safely return to user’s hand to enjoy many more flights.
InvenSense ICM-20789 is in production with select customers now and will be available for wide distribution in Q2’2017. InvenSense is exhibiting in booth #31420 in South Hall 3 at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 5 – 8, 2017.
