Richer User Interface experience is enabled by Motion Sensing through functions such as Gesture Recognition, Pointing, Tracking, 1:1 Move. These functions enable applications to reach new levels of sophistication for users – more immersive gaming, augmented reality, more accurate user data for fitness applications, and location-based services, adding and increasing new ways to generate revenue for carriers and manufacturers.
Navigation applications with location and tracking technology provide improved accuracy outdoors, in urban canyons and indoors by augmenting absolute positioning technologies such as GNSS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Beacons with Motion Sensing. Motion Sensing helps to provide continuous and accurate positioning, and solves the difficult problem of alignment between the person, vehicle and the mobile device to provide accurate tracking in any device orientation.
Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) is being increasingly used in smartphones and tablets, to minimize the effects of hand jitter or other involuntary motion on image quality. OIS relies on an accurate motion sensor to measure the jitter, and the measurement is then used to move the optical path to compensate for the jitter.
Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) is also being used in smartphones and tablets. EIS is a highly effective method of compensating for hand jitter or vehicle motion, that manifests itself in distracting video shake during playback. Like OIS, EIS also requires an accurate motion sensor for tracking the source of jitter. Motion information is integrated during a video frame and used to compensate for jitter by cropping the viewable image from a stream of video frames.
